FAQs # 3 (Curious people)
I guess people find Russell and I an odd couple; a foreigner
and a Filipina in a wheelchair. People get curious and ask all sorts of
questions when they get the chance. Strangers have approached me out of
eagerness to investigate and I always try to be friendly and accommodating. Who
am I after all, to merit so much attention?
So here are some of the most frequently asked questions I get
when my husband and I are spotted and cornered:
Q : Is he good to you? (From relatives mostly)
A : He better be I can run him over with my
wheelchair if he isn’t.
Q : Where did you meet? (From a woman in the wet
market)
A : On the planet. Would you get it if I say “Chat
room 20”?
Q : How long have you known him?
A : I’ve known him 14 years now, 12 years before
we got married. Believe me; we were not this old when we started our
friendship.
Q : How old is he? (From a woman doctor)
A : 71
Q : (shocked) Really? He looks so young!
A : I would not have married him if he looked
103.
Q : Does he have money? (From a woman in the
hospital)
A : I didn’t marry him for his money. Never mind
that he is kind, loving and understanding. I married him for his body.
Q : Does he have a brother? (From another woman)
A : He has a sister but she is straight.
The barrage
of questions usually ends with “oh, you’re so lucky, someone loves you even if
you have a disability.” I used to resent that as if I don’t deserve that love because
I am handicapped but not anymore. I am blessed to have my husband, not because I
have what I don’t deserve but because he is a great guy, I have made a wise
choice for a mate. God is good to me. That phrase doesn’t offend me anymore. I
just smile and watch them turn green with envy.
