Life Promises for couples (A must have)
"Life Promises for Couples" is written by the well known Dr. Gary Chapman, author of the "Five Love Languages". Another book to add to his list of best sellers.
I find it very helpful and illuminating IF the reader is willing to learn and improve so before I give my short but precise review of the book, here are some things you might want to consider before reading:
- Have an open mind. No point in reading this or any book for that matter if you are not willing to listen, learn and apply.
- Think of the book as your mirror. See yourself through what you'll be reading. Instead of using it to criticize or judge your partner, self evaluate.
- Be willing to do. The book has some exercises you can do to enhance your relationship and they can only be effective if applied.
- Share it with your other half. If you can't read it together, share what you have read and learned.
REVIEW:
- The book is in a devotional format but it isn't daily bread. It has Bible verses related to the topic on the opposite page but only has 216 pages to browse so it's not a complete 365 daily intake. You can read it as a devotional material, one topic a day or as a book and finish it in 8 hours. Up to you.
- The articles are concise but to the point.
- It's an easy read. No fancy terms that need looking up the dictionary.
- The book deals with four aspects of marriage:
* The importance of communication
* Positive thinking
* Unconditional love
* Teamwork
That marriage involves both partners working together.
- "Life Promises for Couples" basically focuses on marital issues but I think it
would also be a good read for those couples who plan to marry. It gives a good insight on marriage, love and partnership.
- I don't know if it is a printing error (of the copy I read) or deliberate but some articles are repeated throughout the book, maybe to impress the lessons more or because it's in a devotional format it purposely repeat some topics over and over.
- It's a pocketbook so you can take it with you anywhere. Fits in the bag snugly. It's also priced reasonably - Php 195.00 from the PCBS (Philippine Christian Book Store), $8.15 Kindle from Amazon (I just checked now but price might change).
RECOMMENDATION:
Its a good book for people in relationships who are serious about making it work and last. Whether you're married or just a young couple new in a relationship, the book would be a great benefit.
It's not THE BIBLE of relationships, no book is. Because each and everyone is unique and different from the other, the success of your relationship still depends on the two of you and how far both of you are willing to work on it. This book though, is an awesome guide to getting there.
I highly recommend it.
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
- Share it with your other half. If you can't read it together, share what you have read and learned.
