Gen. 24: An out of the ordinary love story

I think that Isaac’s love story is one very interesting and unique but highly favored by God.  I say that because despite of the following instances I’ve listed below, his marriage to Rebecca was a success.

  1. Isaac didn’t date Rebecca. No ‘getting to know you’ stage. They haven’t even met until they were arranged to be married.

  1. Isaac didn’t choose his wife neither did his dad, mom, friends or any of his relatives but by a servant.

  1. The way the choosing of the wife was out of the ordinary as well. Not picked from a handful of beautiful women but picked out of her kindness to the stranger she didn’t know.

  1. Instant bonding of the family and the servant, of Rebecca and Isaac despite the estrangement.

From reading Isaac and Rebecca’s story, I’ve come to the following conclusions:

-         There’s really no formula in getting it right when it comes to love and romance. One might work for one man/woman and not for another. Dating or not dating, short or long engagement doesn’t guarantee success nor failure
.
-         The approval of family is important. In the story we will find that there was no objection or doubt of any kind from either side of Isaac and Rebecca’s family, there was instant personal relation at first meeting.

Our family and good friends only want what’s best for us so it doesn’t hurt to consult them.

But I think all went smoothly in Isaac’s love story primarily because of the next point. I’ve saved the best for last.

   - Sincere praying can make a difference. That is, if we truly seek God’s    favor and not only what we want. Note that the servant had no one in particular in mind nor did he say anything about her looks or size. He didn’t say may it be the most beautiful one for his master or a wise woman but instead -

May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” (Gen. 24:14 NIV)

He was looking for a kind hearted woman. The servant trusted God for the answer and true enough, when he inquired, she was a distant relative of Abraham’s, exactly what Abraham wanted for his son and had asked the servant to look for.

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
