FAME

The price we get from and the price we pay for it

Susan Boyle
Who knew her before she tried out for the “Britain’s Got Talent” show? She took care of her mother until she died, lived with a cat after that, single and never been kissed and who cared? Who wanted to know her more? She probably passes the same people everyday and no one noticed. Her simplicity belies the talent she’s been endowed with and the beautiful soul she’s always been.

But now things have changed. She’s become a sensation! People want to know Susan Boyle across the world; she’s getting fan mails, probably contracts, work and ADMIRERS. Fame has brought her opportunities beyond her imaginations, friends and possibly, love. And she deserves all of it. Susan was quoted saying “I won’t be lonely anymore”, her invaluable gain. You go girl!!!

Ted Failon
If Susan is reaping from fame, Ted is paying the price for it.

Ted is a famous and respected broadcaster in the Philippines. His wife committed suicide but (investigation still ongoing) who cares? The media and everyone are having a feast concluding whether she really did or he murdered her. Her wake and the investigation flood the local news. A time when his family ought (and should have the right) to privately mourn their dead, they have to deal with paparazzi.

There seems to be an unwritten code that fame makes you public property (specially, in my country). All suddenly, your every move, decision, and problems are being talked about by people you don’t even know or know you. Failon, in an interview said something like - it’s the price of being a public figure and hopes no one else will go through the same thing his family has. Very sad indeed.
Now I don't want to end on a tragic note. Fame is what it is, could bring great things and otherwise, if it knocks on the door, let it in and make good use of it.
