Cyber Tragedy

This is probably unheard of in the Philippines but it was a controversial case in St. Louis MO. in the US in 2007. The case involved the suicide of a 13 year-old girl due to cruel messages sent through MySpace from a fictitious character created by a 49 year-old woman.

The perpetrator, Lori Drew, befriended (through the net – MySpace) the teen, posing as a 16 year old boy pretending to flirt and like her at first but not long after, started sending offensive and cruel messages to the girl, despite knowing the thirteen year old had a mental problem history. Apparently, the messages drove the young teen to commit suicide by hanging herself inside her closet.

To say that one should be careful on the net would be an understatement now. But I’ll still say it, be careful who you trust and make sure to verify any ‘supposed’ truth you’re told here unless it’s coming from someone you personally know or someone who is known to another personal friend who can attest to the story.

And to those who like pulling pranks, playing games and falsifying online, those who bully and abuse, those who scam, who play other people’s feelings, it backfires. One day, you will stand accountable to every person you fooled, maybe you’ll escape or get off lightly (like Lori Drew) from human punishment but you won’t get away from God.

The internet is a good tool for many things, depending on our use of it.
