Friends (Part I)
“Friends are like flowers that beautify our garden.”
So true is the phrase above. Can you imagine not having friends, to laugh with, cry to, have fun with etc.? Who knows the secrets you can’t tell mom, dad or the big brothers and sisters? Who knew your first crush?
Best friend – Could be a family member, school mate, office mate, neighbor, woman, man. Gender doesn’t matter in this case as long as it’s someone you can trust.
You have many friends BUT “THE” best friend is like the no. 1. Before you tell anyone else anything, this person hears it first, and the ones you can’t tell, this one is allowed to know, and you’re confident it’ll be kept secret.
Peer – Could be family too or classmates, a group, neighbors, all women or all men or mix of both. It’s important to choose the people we hang out with. Maybe at first you wouldn’t think they’ll have influence on you but eventually and often without knowing it, they’re starting to rub off on you. Thus the saying – “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.”
It’s healthy to choose, of course, Christian friends who have bright outlook in life (and should because our God is a God of hope), has good values AND are living clean (meaning not drunkards, addicts, gamblers, gossipers etc. – no vices).
Not saying we should avoid non-Christian friends (I have lots of them too). God uses us to reach out to them but remember to be the overcomer rather than the overcomed.
Acquaintances – Now these are the ones we really don’t talk to. We know their names, smile back at them, wave at them, exchange pleasantries when they walk over to greet but it ends there. No follow-ups till we bump into them again.
Friends are shock absorbers that God sends us to cushion the blows of life. With them, you’re just yourself and they are themselves. You never have to impress, compete or outdo friends. The bond you make with them often last a lifetime. It’s one of the best kinds of relationships one can get involved in because friends don’t ever break up. So choose wisely.
“A friend loves at all times and a brother is born out of adversity – Prov. 17:17”
To be continued….
